Comeback Daniil Medvedev Secures First Title in Over Two Years

19 of the Russian's 21 titles have been achieved on hard surfaces

A resurgent Daniil Medvedev won his first championship for over two years with victory over Corentin Moutet in the tournament final.

The Russian, a ex- world number one, has experienced a difficult period, winning just a single victory at the major tournaments and suffering a difficult moment at the US Open.

His varied form on the professional circuit - and struggles with his serving in especial - resulted in him falling of the top ten and finally parting ways with long-time coach Gilles Cervara.

Currently collaborating with Thomas Johansson and Rohan Goetzke, the tennis star has consistently progressed in the past month - culminating in a tightly fought 7-5 4-6 6-3 win over challenger Moutet.

It is Medvedev's first trophy following the Rome competition and first on a hardcourt since March of that year.

Victory also signifies Medvedev has achieved 21 victories at 21 different tournaments.

"This marks the first occasion I am participating in a event with my both daughters at once, so to secure a title is especially meaningful," said tennis professional Medvedev.

"This title is in honour of my child Victoria, because the maiden victory I got when my child my daughter was delivered was for her."

The athlete, the 2021 US Open champion, had failed in his past six title deciders, including in that event earlier this year.

His retrieving play style and frequent outbursts on the tennis court had caused observers to wonder if his ability to compete at the highest level was over.

However the 29-year-old has implemented adjustments in recent weeks, striving to come to the net and compete assertively, reinforced by an improved serve.

He recovered from a break down in the initial set against the challenging Frenchman, securing four of the final five points to take the lead.

The pair traded breaks in the following set before Moutet, bidding for his maiden tour victory, took control to push for a decider.

Moutet saved 4 early-game break points in a tight deciding set before the champion won the break to that score to secure the win.

Fittingly, Medvedev clinched the title with a rally at the net area, with Moutet unable to manage a shot after a lengthy match.
