RAF Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside French aircraft in a combined operation on an underground arms cache in Syria operated by the IS group, as stated by the UK Ministry of Defence.

The facility, located using reconnaissance, was assessed as housing weapons and explosive materials, the statement said, and was located in mountains just north of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our aircraft employed laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to hit a number of access tunnels leading to the depot... preliminary assessments indicate the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.

There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the operation conducted Saturday night and every plane involved made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager tanker plane.

IS - also known as Daesh - established extremist governance over large swathes of both Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This operation shows our UK leadership, and resolve to stand shoulder to shoulder with our allies, to stamp out any re-emergence of IS and their violent and radical beliefs in the region," UK Defence Secretary John Healey stated.

UK warplanes have carried out surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "prevent any efforts to regroup" of Islamic State after its defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I want to thank every member of British forces who took part in this mission for their professionalism and their bravery," he commented. "They were part of a great many UK service members on duty over the festive period. This mission, to remove militants who endanger our safety, highlights how UK forces are always on standby, all year round, ensuring Britain's security domestically and powerful internationally."

In December, the United States armed forces carried out what it described as a "major assault" targeting Daesh sites in the country, after an ambush killed two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The UN reports Islamic State still boasts between 5,000 and 7,000 militants in both countries.
